Block Blaster Puzzle

About this game

Block Blaster Puzzle is a placement puzzle on an eight-by-eight grid, played in a tall frame with the board in the middle and a tray beneath it. Pieces arrive as small shapes in that tray and have to be fitted onto the board by hand; nothing falls on its own and nothing is timed.

Each stage is numbered and carries a target rather than an endless score. The header of the first stage read LEVEL 1 above a bar showing 0/350, so the stage is finished by reaching a stated number of points rather than by surviving.

How to play

Drag a shape from the tray onto empty squares and let go to commit it. A shape can only go where every one of its squares finds room, and once placed it stays, so the board fills whether or not you are clearing anything.

Filling a complete row or column clears it and scores. The board colours what is already placed, and a full line disappears leaving the rest of the arrangement untouched, which is where the space for the next awkward shape comes from.

Tips

• Clear from the edges inward. A line completed against a wall opens a straight channel that any shape can use, while one cleared through the middle leaves fragments on both sides that only the smallest pieces fit.
• Place awkward shapes first when the tray offers a choice. The single squares and short bars will fit almost anywhere later, so spending them early on gaps that a longer piece could have filled is what strands a board.
• Count toward the target rather than playing for survival. The stage ends at a stated figure, so a line cleared now is worth exactly as much as one cleared when the board is nearly full, and there is no bonus for lasting longer.
